Volcanic 7 Summits

Climbing the highest volcano of every continent

(Scroll down for map and more informations)

The Project

Since I have climbed El Misti volcano in Peru over 10 years ago I have been fascinated by volcanoes. This passion brought me to many remote areas like a place that felt like the end of the world: Kamchatka, East Russia. And also to the hottest place on Earth, the Danakil Depression in Ethiopia. To one of the most active volcanoes in Japan, to the primeval Tengger Caldera in Indonesia and many many other unbelievable places.

Besides these fascinating adventures I am always looking for new challenges that I now have found in the Volcanic Seven Summits project. Means climbing the highest volcanic peak on every continent within coming 2, maybe 2 ½ years. For example the nearly 7.000m high Ojos de Salado in Chile, the Damavand in Northern Iran, the Kilimandscharo in Tanzania and Mount Giluwe in the jungles of Papua New Guinea.

And, most challenging in coming January, Mount Sidley volcano in Western Antarctica in one of the less visited areas on our planet.

The Idea

But the idea of the whole project is not just climbing those volcanoes. I want to tell more than a plain mountaineering story. On the one hand I am going to spent also some time within those countries and experience the cultures. On the other hand I want to tell a personal story, telling about me and the people who are going to join me. How to prepare for such a project as a photographer (means “normal guy” 🙂 ) and not as a pro mountaineer – as I am none. How is it to climb a volcano and how is it to face all those challenges?

In addition I want to climb every volcano together with another photographer to give it a unique look and style and to tell a new and different story.

So it’s going to be seven continents/countries, seven volcanoes and seven photographers. Anyone who is interested in joining that fantastic project please drop me a note.

Planning and preparations

I’ve started the project with an exclusive expedition to Mount Sidley volcano in Antarctica this January. More about that ‘once in the lifetime’ trip you’ll find HERE.

At the moment I am preparing and training for Mount Kilimandscharo in August/September. Ojos del Salado (and maybe Orizaba) will follow in the beginning of 2018 and Mount Damavand in Iran in summer 2018. Elbrus and Giluwe still to be decided.
